Artist or Entrepreneur?

I'm grappling with my identity around work and asking myself, "Am I more of an artist or an entrepreneur?"

I started the Art & Business of Meditation podcast last May, and by all accounts, it is growing and doing well. A part of me knows this is exactly what I should be doing.

However, lately, things feel very business-focused, and I'm asking myself, where is the art?

Where is the time to work on your next book?
Why aren't you hosting classes and coming up with new meditations?
What happens if you veer too far from what got you here?

Thankfully, these emails always feel like an artistic expression. You may sense the care I put into it, or you may think I'm just another dude trying to sell you something.

In truth, it's both.

I cherish having this space to express myself and share my creations.

AND, This work is how I make my living, and selling is a part of a healthy business.

I'm unsure if I'm getting it right.

In my men's group, we had a conversation about business branding. (FYI, this is not a typical men's group convo.)

Someone in the group who receives my emails said,

"Lou, your brand's all over the place. I have no idea what you do."

I had to laugh because this is my struggle.

As an artist, I don't want to limit myself to speaking about only ONE thing to ONE type of person.

But as an entrepreneur, I know this is a path to a thriving business.

The people I follow who always stick to one message feel dry. Yes, you're good at this one thing, but who are you really?

I want to feel a connection, not just read their formulated copywriting.

One of my teachers, Steve March, says, "We don't need more content, we need more contact."

What he means by contact is to feel the truth of another, as that helps us feel the truth of ourselves.

Helping people contact a piece of themselves is the work of an artist.

So can art and business live together?

Can I share my truth and offer my work at the same time?

I believe so.

And here's an attempt.

Maybe this resonates with you because you know you have soul-art to give to the world, yet need help growing it into a thriving business.

Maybe you ask, "How can I devote myself to my craft and grow a business that supports me and my family?"
