Is anyone reading this?
I just got back from five weeks in Guatemala. I’m navigating the post-trip comedown as I find my routine and get back to work.
As I search for the motivation to write this post, a question comes to mind—is anyone reading this?
I think every creator asks this question once in a while. Iterations may sound like:
Does what I’m doing matter?
What’s the point?
Who even cares?
I decided a while back that my time was better spent writing a newsletter than creating for social media. Something about an email feels more intimate than catching someone's attention as they're scrolling.
Writing for Instagram feels like a waste of time, but spending hours on this newsletter feels justified….Why? What if no one's reading?
What I trade in writing a newsletter is instant gratification. After hitting send, I don’t get hundreds of likes and red dopamine hits. Instead, the only feedback I receive is when people take time to reply.
Yet sometimes I spend hours crafting a message, send an email that I’m excited about, and get no response. So what's the point?
If you’re an artist and one sees your art, is it still worth doing?
Steven Pressfield wrote a book called, Nobody Wants to Read Your Sh*t. Rather than shaming you into giving up, his point is that it’s not about others reading—it’s about you creating. Validation is nice, but it’s futile.
Writing this newsletter is as much for me as it is for you. These shares are my weekly writing practice. They help me craft ways to communicate ideas, and the skills I learn will grow and compound for years to come.
What matters is not what you think (although I hope for the best) but showing up and shipping the work.
Are you waiting to get 10,000 followers before sharing your art or starting your business?
Create for the sake of creating, not because you’ll get likes, but because you are a creator, an artist, a teacher, an executive. Do it because it’s an expression of your Divine nature.
Like so much in life, the joy comes from the process, not the outcome. So first, do something for its own sake, and then let any recognition, rewards, or financial success come later.
Are you reading this? If so, THANK YOU. Attention is the most valuable asset we have.
With so much after our attention, the fact you're spending it here matters dearly to me.
I will continue doing my best to make reading my articles worth your time.
If that’s you, here’s my invitation to shoot me an email and say Hi 👋
It’s nice to know you’re out there. :-)
