Why we do the work

The other day, someone asked me why I do what I do.

Part of me feels this question deserves a profound altruistic response, like "To ease the suffering of all beings."

While easing suffering is what we do when serving our purpose, my answer is more selfish than selfless.

I said, “Because it helps me feel closer to God.”

Other less noble things I could say:

  • I love the freedom it gives

  • I love that I get to do it from anywhere in the world

  • I love choosing what to work on and creating out of inspiraiton

  • I love witnessing others feel, heal & transform (My ego also loves the validation.)

  • I love not having a ceiling on how much money I can make (Which also means I don’t have a floor.)

Yet when I come back to why I started, it came from listening to the call of Spirit and glimpsing the Divine comfort that comes from moving in Its direction.

Intimacy with God is a primal longing.

It’s not only at the core of what I do; it’s at the core of everything we do, even if we're unaware of it.

It’s underneath the striving of the athlete to reach the pinnacle in their sport or the painter to make art that leaves a legacy.

It’s why we enjoy hobbies, whether golf, running, chess, knitting—you name it. It allows the thinking mind to slow down so we can enter a flow state and glimpse the Eternal, if only briefly.

Longing for God is behind the three false idols: Money, Power, and Fame.

The Wall Street banker thinks money will fill a God-sized hole.
The politician believes status and power will do it.
The actress feels that everyone knowing her name will solve her problems.

(BTW, understanding which false Idol you lean towards can be helpful. For me, it’s fame.)

If they could only experience the Real One, they would know that is what they seek.

I don’t feel God in every moment I’m working, but it’s the moments I get the taste that affirm my path and keep me coming back for more.

I don’t always get it right. My ego loves to get in the way, but that’s part of the game!

There's a verse in The Course in Miracles:

"I am here only to be truly helpful.
I am here to represent Him Who sent me.
I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do, because He Who sent me will direct me.
I am content to be wherever He wishes, knowing He goes there with me.
I will be healed as I let Him teach me to heal."

I will be healed as I let him teach me to heal is the essence of life purpose.

As we heal our wounds, we heal our world.

We become Beacons of Light others gravitate toward.

Not all of us need to make a living shining their light. Many are content deepening their spirituality, doing their day job, and enjoying their hobbies. This is great!

Yet, if you’re like me, you feel a pull—an inner knowing—you’re here to be a beacon of light that guides others back home. And you sense that doing so will bring you closer to home.

You may also feel the fear, doubt, or insecurity that comes along with such a vision.

If that resonates, I dreamed up Beacon for you. 💡
