This Is Awkward

I’m two months into a purpose discovery program.

I can imagine you might say,

Lou, are you a teacher in it?

No, I’m a student looking to discover my purpose.

But wait a sec, don’t you already have that?

Aren’t you the guy who coaches and runs weekly sessions on purpose?

Yes, that is me too.

But as I’ve shared before, I’m in a process of identity dissolution, and again going inwards to uncover what is truly mine to do.

This quote speaks volumes:

“A true vocation calls us out beyond ourselves; breaks our heart in the process and then humbles, simplifies and enlightens us about the hidden, core nature of the work that enticed us in the first place.”
— David Whyte

My heart has been broken more times than I can count. The last few years have humbled me, and this program is helping me return to the core nature of what enticed me in the first place.

There is so much to share about this process, but one thing that has come up is my “Image Consultant” part.

When I tell people I’m in the program, my image consultant wants to make sure I’m seen in a certain way. It doesn’t want me to look vulnerable, like I’m still figuring it out.

It wants me to be the expert, to portray the image of success.

I'm tired of it.

Maybe it’s cliché to say that the older I get, the less I know for sure.

I’m not the 27-year-old who felt like he had the answers.

I just turned 37 and am finally ok letting the questions be enough.

What I do know is that the longing to be used in the way God made me is at the core of my being.

Maybe you have a similar longing.

I think we all do.

Knowing our purpose is paradoxical.

For one, there is nothing to “find”- it is right here & now as you read these words.

AND—understanding it is an endless cavern, with deeper & deeper crevices to discover.

Maybe I’m at a different part of the cave, but know that I am in it with you, holding the doubt and fear, while continuing to find clarity around who I am, and what is mine to give.
