Follow Your Heart

“You’ve heard that before,
What does it mean, where do I start?
How can I know it will work before I leave?
How can I be assured the security I need?
Those are the wrong questions to ask.
Better to get going, it’s how you learn fast
There is no path, no map to follow
No 7-step process, no next lesson tomorrow.
Life will be your greatest teacher.
Show up, pay attention, pay the meter.
This will cost you more than you realize
You’ll face setback after setback that’s just growth in disguise,
All to help you wake up and go, oh, that’s who I am inside!
Once you start, there’s no going back.
So how about I give you some better questions to ask...
What if nothing’s missing?
What if you’re already there?
Watch the notion of following your heart burst into thin air.
Because your heart doesn’t need you to pursue it.
It’s been beating before you even knew it.
What if life knows what it’s doing?
All it needs you to do is get out of the way,
Let the Tao takeover, do you get that word play?
But for real, here’s the deal,
I write these words to show you how I feel
I’ve been following my heart for years,
I still don’t know where it’s going
All I got is what I can show for it.
I’ve traveled the world, been to all beautiful places
I got a wife that’s loved me through all different phases
I got work that I love and a teacher I call son
Come I think about it, I’ve already won.
You see, he’s the one I got sober for,
I took that leap, learned what I was made for
And this all happened long before he came through the door.

Now that he’s here, it’s time for my next iteration
To know who I am, no need for validation.
May my life be an example so that he shoots for the stars
When he asks for advice, I might just say,
Follow your heart.”
