Motion Beats Meditation
Did you catch Pharrell at the Grammys?
If you don’t know, Pharrell Williams is one of the most accomplished artists of his generation.
Producer, rapper, singer, designer, philanthropist—his body of work is astounding.
As he accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award this year, the crowd’s jaw dropped when he said he was 52 years old.
He looks like the same Pharrell I knew from '04, when I was hitting the beat of “Grindin” on my 8th-grade cafeteria table. (Might be a millennial thing.)
He credits his youthful energy to the fact that he gets to do what he loves every day.
Sounds like a sentiment you and I would agree with.
Doing what we love is why we create meditations, run programs, and help people find purpose, healing, and direction.
Then Pharrell gave his lengthy advice on how we, too, can achieve great things.
He said:
Work.
Ugh, Pharell…really? Work?
Not:
Wait for the full moon to set your intentions.
Repeat these 10 affirmations every morning.
Align with your highest timeline, and you’ll grow rich?
No, he didn’t mention any of those. Dang.
He just said:
Work. Never stop working.
Could it be that simple?
Could success actually come from working harder instead of vibrating higher?
In the age of self-care glorification, hard work gets labeled "toxic hustle culture."
But I know more people depressed from lack of work than from too much.
Plus, have you seen Pharell?
Does this 52-year-old look like he’s burnt out?
All hard work is not equal.
When you love what you do, you willingly endure the pain and the process to find success.
You make an effort to overcome your doubt and perfectionism in the service of your calling.
You take action. Fail. Learn. Iterate. Try again.
Repeat until you succeed.
My mantra for 2026 is:
Motion beats meditation.
I’m not saying to give up your practices or affirmations. I still do them.
I’m saying, you have to actually put in the work—create, ship, refine, and get better.
